Humble Chiropractic - Massage Therapy
The ancient oriental technique of massage is good for more than relaxation. That may be why it’s become an important part of chiropractic therapy. Any chiropractor recognizes that relaxed muscles make it easier to resolve musculoskeletal issues and help reduce or relieve pain. Massage is also used by physical therapists and other medical disciplines as well. Here are the basics of combining massage therapy and chiropractic, from Humble Chiropractic, of Fort Myers, Florida.
Massage is a much more complex art than it might seem at first glance. In fact, there are more than 80 different styles of massage. For example, deep, strong pressure is used to loosen tight fascia. The fascia is the covering over a muscle; if it’s tight, it restricts movement. Long, smooth strokes are relaxing. Swedish massage is very vigorous, while deep tissue massage focuses on the soft tissue areas that can become inflamed. In addition to the physical aspects of massage, many practitioners combine it with aromatherapy or acupressure. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but instead of needles, the practitioner uses his or her thumbs, fingers and knuckles on pressure points.
Massage or a Chiropractor?
The answer to that question is both. General massage therapy (not medically oriented) is primarily performed for relaxation. Therapeutic massage, however, is used to treat medical conditions such as back pain, headaches or stiff joints. Massage combined with chiropractic is the best of both worlds. The chiropractor makes spinal or joint adjustments to promote better alignment. Once proper alignment is achieved, massage enters the picture. Massage helps keep tense muscles, tendons or ligaments from contributing to alignment problems. Massage also allows you to stretch tight muscles farther than you otherwise could.
Your muscles receive messages from the brain through the nerves then run off the spinal cord. Massage and chiropractic adjustments help relieve inflammation and irritation of those nerves. By loosening muscles, massage improves the effectiveness of chiropractic therapy. Research has found massage can promote faster healing, increase blood flow and flexibility. In addition, massage has been found to increase your overall range of motion. Massage can even improve immune system function. Among other medical conditions, massage is used to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea, fibromyalgia, and pain from joint replacement surgery.
